Professional Biography

Dr. Ghoniem is currently Emeritus Professor of Urology at the UCI Health School of Medicine Department of Urology.

Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Dr. Ghoniem left Egypt in 1980 to pursue a fellowship in neurourology and female urology at Brown University, Rhode Island. He subsequently completed a second urology residency at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

In 1987, Dr. Ghoniem was appointed to the Department of Urology at Tulane University as Assistant Professor and Chief, Section of Urodynamics and Female Urology. In 1991, he was appointed Associate Professor of Urology with a joint appointment in the Department of Gynecology and in 1998 promoted to Professor of Urology and Clinical Professor of Gynecology. In 2000, Dr. Ghoniem joined Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston, Florida where he founded the section of Voiding Dysfunction, Female Urology, and Pelvic Reconstruction. He also served as the Chairman of Medical Education.

Dr. Ghoniem has been supervisor for more than 43 national and international clinical and research fellows. Dr. Ghoniem has edited and co-edited two textbooks and four special journal issues and is an author or coauthor on 35 book chapters, more than 193 peer-reviewed scientific articles, and 37 surgical videos. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of International Urogynecology, Pelvic Floor Medicine Journal, Arab Journal Of Urology, Open Aerujztgccess Journal of Urology, Journal of Neurourology and Urodynamics, International Neurourology Journal (INJ) and Gynecology and Pelvic Medicine (GPM). He is a reviewer for numerous scientific journals and has been appointed as an expert reviewer for the Journal of Urology, Urology, Endourology, Neurourology and Urodynamics and American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Ghoniem is an active member of several national and international societies including the American Urological Association (AUA), Western Section of the American Urological Association (WSAUA), Society of Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU), International Continence Society (ICS), International Urogynecological Association (IUGA) and the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS). He was the Chairman on ICS 2020 meeting and member of the ICS scientific committee. He was Chairman of the Research and Development Committee for IUGA, a member of the Education Committee for SUFU, and an elected member of the Scientific Committee for ICS.

Dr. Ghoniem is currently serving as a consultant for AUA/SUFU guidelines panel on female stress urinary incontinence. In the past few years, he served as a reviewer for annual abstracts of AUA, SUFU and ICS. He also served as a reviewer of IUGA grants for the past 6 years. He served as a consultant for the surgical treatment group of the 1st International Consultation on Urinary Incontinence in 1998 and was a member of the same committee in the 2nd Consultation on Urinary Incontinence in 2001. In 2009, he was appointed by the NIH as Chairman for the review panel on incontinence and served as a reviewer on the study sections of bladder physiology in 2000 and urinary incontinence in 2006. During his career to date, Dr. Ghoniem has been instrumental in improving and introducing many diagnostic and surgical techniques in the field of urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse such as ISD classification, vaginal pack test, suburethral sling, Genisphere injection, bladder neck wrap, male sling, transobturator technique, and chronic sacral nerve tined lead removal technique. He is also an inventor with patent device to treat patient’s overactive bladder.

Dr. Ghoniem is also an inventor with patent issued May 17, 2016 (Patent No. 9339329). The patent includes a device and method for Bladder denervation for treating overactive bladder.
