Urethral Cysts

A urethral cyst is a damaged tissue or organ part, impairing its normal function.

The urethra is an organ that transports urine from the bladder out of the body. In males, it begins at the bladder and passes through the prostate gland, perineum (the area between the scrotum and anus), and the penis. In females, the urethra is much shorter, extending from the bladder to just in front of the vagina, opening externally. Normal urine flow is painless, controllable, with a strong stream and clear urine without visible blood.

Causes of Urethral Cysts

Urethral cysts can develop due to trauma, infection, or congenital factors. Possible causes include:

  • Abscesses
  • Infections
  • Pelvic fractures
  • Straddle injuries
  • Rare congenital conditions
  • Injury from medical instruments (such as catheters or cystoscopes)

Symptoms of Urethral Cysts

In females, urethral cysts are located in the vaginal wall near the urethra. A urethral cyst looks like a shiny, tense, bulging yellowish-white mass that narrows the urethral opening.

Common symptoms include:

  • A palpable lump
  • Painful urination
  • Misdirected urinary stream
  • Urinary obstruction

Treatment of Urethral Cysts

During a medical appointment, the physician will review the patient’s symptoms and perform a pelvic examination to see or feel the urethral cyst. If urethral cysts are asymptomatic, treatment is usually unnecessary as they typically resolve spontaneously by rupturing and reducing in size. However, if symptoms such as obstruction, infection, or pain arise, your urologist may opt to incise the cyst with a scalpel blade to drain it and alleviate symptoms.
